I ordered off Skip the Dishes...and perhaps had my delivery driver went the right way, my order would have tasted ok...but when a 5 min delivery turned into a 15 min delivery, you can imagine the quality wasn't good. The rice was mush and cold. My spring roll was soggy and I could count less than 5x the number of pieces of beef brisket that were edible as the rest were all pieces of fat. The chicken soup was less to be desired as well. Total waste of money to eat mushy rice. Upon looking at the reviews on skip the dishes my expectations were high...I will not recommend this place to anyone...nor skip the dishes. Brutal.

Pretty good Cantonese food

Nice Auntie and Uncle team running this 'Cha Chaan Teng' Hong Kong Coffee Shop. The Auntie is actually really nice and the food is OK. I prefer it for dinner, that way I don't have to compete with annoying tech office lunch groups for a table.

Bad service. I ordered a beef and onion with noodles option. The amount was small and the owner throw the plate on my table. After the meal, my stomach hurts! I will NOT recommend this place to anyone. To reply your comment:I didn’t see the cost on the menu, so I deleted my comment above regarding the price. However the taste was disappointed. And the service was bad. My recommendation is the same. It was for sure NOT worth $15 for what I got.

When I was a student, I used to come here for my home taste. So this is a revisit after 15 years, the old couple no longer owns the restaurant and the taste just not the same any more. The fired rice and flat noodle were way too oily. The rest were also below average.

Poor service and bad quality of fried noodles!

Love the beef chow mein with XO sauce

Can also slip the egg beef rice is good

A Waterloo institution. Great simple Hong Kong style dishes, prepared quickly by the chef who's been cooking for decades. Try the curry beef with extra hot sauce, OMG!

It is alright, not the best Chinese food in waterloo, and they only take cash.

Not the worst, not the best.

Nice sour and spicy soup.

Good people, good quality, they cook knowing that it is someone's meal. That is important.

I ordered lunch special of braised tofu with rice for $7.50+tax. But it was bland, just a little bit of tofu and greens thrown in lots of hot rice. it was not of restaurant quality, I could have easily done this myself at home. The restaurant was empty when I went and I saw a lot of students going to the Thai express next door, instead of this one..

food was alright but received 80% onion and pinapple 20% chicken in my sweet and sour chicken

Taste is good, but the service is really bad. Asking for two cups of ice waters for twice, but it never comes. Only one server serving all the tables.

Service is nice and dishes are large. Not the most authentic Chinese/Hong Kong cuisine. Environment is very much like Hong Kong though.

Cheap, great tasting food in large portions! My favorite HK restaurant by far. Cash only, so don't forget to withdraw before eating!

Authentic Hong Kong food. Best Singapore Rice Noodles in town.

I ate at Jia Jia Lok almost 2.5 years, they have good price, good food, big portion and nice people. I really don't understand why some people give one star review with no reason, or someone said small portion, little meat with this price. Different people have different taste. It definitely worth 5 star!!

Fantastic Chinese restaurant!!! Really recommend you to eat there! You won't regret it! Lunch special is very worth it!

Glad to hear they're still going. Definitely a must visit on my next trip to K-W. The beef and fried noodles in xo sauce is one of the tastiest dishes I've ever had, anywhere.

Found hair in the dish! Was absolutely disgusting🤮 The cashier was rude and pretended she doesn’t understand ENGLISH or Mandarin. They refused to refund whatsoever. Will never go again.-------Response to what did I order: ordered the " Jia Jia Lok Famous Rice"-------Answering about not understanding mandarin: I tried english as well -------Answering about exchange and drink: exchange for a new one is what you SHOULD have done, drink was upon request-------or maybe just consider to tie up the hair before frying the egg

Nicely satisfies my craving for Hong Kong cafe-diner style food, a hard find around here. Weekday specials are $8-10, service is fast. They also take debit now!

Nothing special in terms of the restaurant/building, but the food is amazing. Also, CASH ONLY. Luckily, there's a BMO in the same plaza.

I tried the satay chicken chow mein and it was more like a lo mein than chow mein.

Huge menu

Always fantastic. A hidden gem. I make a point of eating here whenever I'm in Waterloo

Cheap, good, not greasy. Highly recommend beef noodle

A hidden gems! One of my favorite low profile places in town. The food is excellent, leaning more towards Hong Kong than mainland China, and the portions are generous, all at modest prices. However, keep in mind they only take cash.

Excellent food and super friendly folks. Quickly made this my go-to place for Asian dishes!

Quick service and reasonable priceDefinitely not the most authentic flavor but worth the price and volume.

Considering I suddenly had a hankering for brisket and tendon fried noodle and was able to Google and find it literally 5 minutes away from where I was at the time (AND the food was delicious!), I already know that I will be going back to this restaurant to try more dishes. The brisket couldve used a bit more tendon and the sauce needed somewhat more soya flavour, but it was hot, tasty and the perfect portion size. It was also ready in less than ten minutes - very impressed.

This place has a certain home-y feel to it (that's just me though, HK is like home and this place serves HK food)That aside, their food is on the dece side. It's not bad for an inexpensive meal or two every so often and probably one of the best restaurants serving this particular cuisine around campus.
mike jackson
I already here for 3 years, excellent food and friendly guys there. And they have Combination dish just under $10 now. What are good news!!

I have been here 5 yrs, from own by the old couple before to now a younger chef, he is a very nice guy. Its a good HK style restaurant in waterloo, nice and clean, cheap and great food. I like the rice noodle stir fry with beef, not greasy. Jia Jia Lok Famous rice, good for the big stomach!! Highly recommend!
Stephanie
Staff is nice enough. Not typically busy and the food isn't very authentic. Usually just overload your dish with rice as to cheap out on meats.
Susanne Kish
Yummy and so glad they are open later and had a renovation. How about a location on fairway rd. We need a chinese restaurant. I wish you continued success. The chef has professional training certificates on the wall. The spring roll I had for me could have less ginger and a little meat in it. Satay Beef ho fun delicious.
Guotian Ye
Traditional Hong Kong style food. It's not a Canadian-Chinese mixed style.
Critic Review
I went here about 3-4 years ago because of the good reviews. I ordered take out and while I was waiting I could hear the cook routinely horking and spitting into what sounded like a tin. It was very loud and extremely disgusting. Unfortunately I had already paid for my food, so I just threw it out once they gave it to me. It's my understanding that in China, spitting is considered a sign of good hygiene, but in Canada they must understand that it is unacceptable, especially in the food service industry. After all, how do we know he is not spitting in our food either intentionally or unintentionally?

Bruh this place is lit ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ it's one of the best Chinese restaurant in Waterloo lolI am in it right now.😊😊 so people that want to know if they have spring rolls, they do!!!it's my favorite dish. So come here to eat!

Great place to drop by for a bite, highly recommended hk cafe style food that hasn't changed much over the years!
Rorie Shade
Not the great experience it used to be. Today my large seafood and noodle soup order was 13.95, and I received 5 very small shrimp, one small piece of calamari and two bite sized, albeit , tasty pieces of fish. This is less than half this order used to be
QIN Hao
instant noodle is even better

Cute place, good value for food, the owner/server was really nice. They only accept cash though.

This place serves great hong kong dishes in a very hong kong environment aha. Don't expect premium dishes but the ones they have are quite delicious and something you'll enjoy on the daily.
